Diana’s racy black dress bought by fashion museum

21 Jun

LONDON -A racy black gown worn by Lady Diana Spencer on one of her first official engagements has been snapped up by a Chilean fashion museum for nearly 200,000 pounds (more than $275,000) — several times the original estimate.
The strapless silk taffeta dress’s revealing cut and striking black color caused a minor scandal when Diana was pictured stepping out of a limousine in the outfit in at a London charity event in 1981. But while some thought the dress was too daring for the 19-year-old royal bride-to-be, it helped turn Diana into an overnight fashion icon.
“I think Diana didn’t really have a particular sense of style, I mean, she dressed as a typical ‘Sloane Ranger’ of that time, you know, with the skirts, cardigan, little sweater, pearls, it was kind of a uniform for girls of that age,” said Elizabeth Emanuel, who designed the black dress with her then-husband David.
Emanuel said the couple didn’t anticipate the reaction the dress would draw.

Do You Need a New Look?

13 Jun

Last week I saw a picture of Michelle Williams’ new haircut and decided I had to have it. That day. I was so sick of my same old hairstyle that I wanted to change immediately (I love my short new ‘do, by the way.) I also like to change up my style frequently, partly because I have a low boredom threshold and partly because I love to try new things. If it’s been a while since you’ve freshened up your look, take my quick quiz to see if you could use something new.

101 Things I Learned in Fashion School

13 Jun

This great little book, 101 Things I Learned in Fashion School, Compare Prices, is perfect for the aspiring fashion designer. Not only is it full of design advice I’d love to see about half of the “Project Runway” designers follow (like “There’s a dangerous gray line between fashion and costume”), the book also has tidbits for anyone curious about fashion (such as “Why men and women button on opposite sides.”) It’s all designed in short chapters to make it easy to read and quick to reference.

‘Sex and the City 2′ Almost Here!

13 Jun

I’m just beyond excited to go see “Sex and the City 2″ with my BFF. We’ve been planning to make it a Carrie-worthy evening of cocktails and shopping. Of all the things I am most looking forward to in the movie, I think the return of Aidan Shaw is the most interesting (loved him!) I also can’t wait to see the clothes, of course, especially when there are so many amazing pieces (with a $10 million clothing budget it tends to be pretty fab). Which character are you looking most forward to seeing in “Sex and the City 2?”

First Lady’s Fashion Splash

12 Jun

Did you see First Lady Michelle Obama’s gorgeous blue one-shoulder gown she wore this week? Everything about the Peter Sorenson gown was spectacular and the First Lady’s hair and makeup were really spot-on, as well. The Obamas welcomed the Mexican President to the second State Dinner at the White House.
